Finding gentle pace of life in eastern Gansu

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2026-06-22 18:37

In Pingliang and Qingyang, two cities in eastern Gansu province, life unfolds at a gentler pace.

The Kongtong Mountain in Pingliang rises through layers of mist. Up there, a single strike of a singing bowl sends acoustic ripples through the air, and for a moment, the noise of the world simply falls away. It is a quiet kind of magic, unhurried and unforced.

That sense of healing continues beyond the mountain. Down to Lingtai county — hometown of Huangfu Mi, the physician known for advancing acupuncture — visitors can still see the tradition carried on today. Silver needles and centuries-old practices remain part of daily life, helping people find balance and relief.

In Qingyang city, craftsmanship tells another story. Embroiderers stitch colorful threads into traditional sachets filled with herbs, while paper-cutting artists transform simple red paper into intricate patterns inspired by everyday hopes and blessings.

From mountain scenery and time-honored medical skills to delicate folk handicrafts, the two cities offer a different rhythm of life. Come along with our camera and experience the simple, warm local life of eastern Gansu.
