China State Shipbuilding Corp's Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding signed contracts late last week to build 13 container vessels of 5,000 TEU and above for three domestic and international shipowners.
At current market rates, the aggregate value of the 13 vessels, including three of 5,300 TEU, four of 6,200 TEU, and six of 6,400 TEU, stands at about 7.3 billion yuan ($1.07 billion), according to calculations by the ship news website Eworldship.
The global container fleet is undergoing a renewal phase amid growing low-carbon compliance demands. Huangpu Wenchong said in a statement. The company described the multi-type batch order as a landmark market achievement in capitalizing on the shipping industry's green-transition trend, strengthening its competitive position in the international container shipbuilding sector.
With the new contracts, Huangpu Wenchong has now secured a total of 39 medium-sized container ships of 5,000 TEU and above, giving it a prominent large-scale construction edge in the global medium container vessel segment, the statement added.
The 5,300-TEU vessel is a benchmark medium-sized container ship independently developed by Huangpu Wenchong. Measuring 235 meters long with a molded breadth of 37.5 meters, it has a deadweight tonnage of 71,500 metric tons.
Huangpu Wenchong, a subsidiary of CSSC and a Shanghai Stock Exchange-listed company, is located at the mouth of the Pearl River in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.
