China blasts Japan for covering up truth about 'comfort women'

By ZHANG YUNBI | chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2026-06-24 17:26

In response to the Japanese government's pressure on countries to cancel plans of installing "comfort women" memorial statues, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday that China urges the Japanese authorities to face up to the country's history of aggression and faithfully admit their guilt and apologize.

Recently, the city of Auckland in New Zealand had planned to set up a "comfort women" memorial statue, but the project was halted under pressure from Japan.

Beijing calls on Tokyo to "stop covering up the truth and suppressing the voices of justice", Guo said at a daily news conference in Beijing.

"All the victimized countries should uphold a correct perspective on World War II history, preserve historical truth, prevent the repeat of such tragedies, and jointly safeguard the hard-won peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific," he said.
