The Shaanbei-Anhui ±800-kilovolt ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission project has been completed and commenced operation on Tuesday, according to the State Grid Corporation of China.

The project marks the nation's first UHVDC transmission project to go into service during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period, representing another landmark development in the country's efforts to serve the national "West-to-East Power Transmission" strategy.

The commissioning of the line holds major strategic significance for enhancing national energy security guarantee capabilities, promoting the trans-regional optimal allocation of clean energy, and accelerating the green and low-carbon transition of the energy sector.

With a total investment of 20.50 billion yuan, the transmission line stretches 1,055 kilometers, and features a rated voltage of ±800 kV and a rated capacity of 8 million kilowatts.

Once fully operational, the project will transmit more than 36 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to Anhui province annually. Notably, new energy power will account for over 50 percent of the total transmitted volume, playing a vital role in balancing mid-to-long-term power supply and demand while upgrading and optimizing the energy structure.

To date, State Grid has cumulatively constructed and put into operation 43 UHV projects, comprising 22 alternating current (AC) and 21 direct current (DC) lines. The company's total cross-regional and cross-provincial power transmission capacity has surpassed 380 million kW.

During the 15th Five-Year Plan period, State Grid plans to accelerate the construction of modern power grids and further enhance cross-regional and cross-provincial transmission capabilities. The company aims to reinforce the critical energy transmission corridors, providing reliable electricity to support high-quality economic and social development and meet the needs of the public.
