A sports fest that fuses athletics, commerce, culture, and tourism opened at a commercial complex in Shanghai's Hongkou district on Saturday, kicking off a 59-day event that runs until Aug 31.
The Haz-zajin sports fest spans five commercial and office zones across the Ruihong Xintiandi, featuring more than 31 major competitions, 53 sports categories, and over 250 activities designed to engage all age groups.
"As the economy develops and living standards rise, we're seeing consumers' passion for sports reach new heights," Lei Yanqing, senior director of Shui On Xintiandi, said, highlighting the event's approach to connecting sports with community spaces, technology, and commerce.
The festival showcases two flagship competitions — a table tennis challenge, which taps into the city's Ping-Pong enthusiasm, and a 4v4 football tournament that offers separate divisions for youth and adults.
The lineup encompasses competitions at multiple levels, including national events, municipal competitions, and district-level contests.
"We also noticed growing numbers of international consumers in the area," Lei added. "While the competitions aren't specifically designed for foreigners, events like the table tennis tournament have drawn strong participation from the expatriate community over the past two editions and this year is no exception."
