East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai established the School of Energy on Sunday, as its latest effort to serve the national energy strategy.

Zhang Jianhua, former head of the National Energy Administration, said that energy security is a global and strategic issue related to the economic and social development of a country. It is expected that the school can benchmark national strategies, focus on the construction of the new-type energy system, break through key technologies in the entire industry chain, and produce landmark achievements. It should also deepen the collaboration between industry, academia and research, and open up channels for the transformation of achievements. Meanwhile, it should promote international exchanges and cooperation and lead global energy innovation, he said.

Zhai Jinguo, deputy director of the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai, said that Shanghai has included new energy and green low-carbon development in the emerging pillar industries of the 15th Five-Year Plan, and the establishment of the school fully demonstrates the university's strategic foresight and mission.

Jiang Chuanhai, Party secretary of the university, said that the school will make efforts in interdisciplinary integration, high-level team gathering, key core technology R&D, and top-notch innovative talent cultivation.

On the same day, four cross-innovation platforms were unveiled, offering support for the School of Energy.
