All 172 elderly people trapped by floodwaters at a nursing home in Binyang county, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, have been safely rescued, local officials confirmed Tuesday.
Luo Xianjie, vice-county head of Binyang, announced the success during a news conference on Tuesday to provide updates on the latest progress of the local flood rescue and relief work.
Triggered by Typhoon Maysak, torrential rains pounded Binyang from Sunday to Monday, triggering severe flooding that hit Gantang town the hardest, he said.
The affected nursing home housed a total of 182 residents. Ten seniors who had been receiving hospital treatment evacuated in advance before the flood inundated the area.
The remaining 172 residents, along with eight staff members, were trapped inside the nursing home building amid the rising floodwaters. All were later evacuated.
A total of 8,150 local residents have been relocated and resettled for safety. Authorities said no casualties have been reported so far.
