NANNING -- One main road leading to the government seat of Zhenlong township in the city of Hengzhou, South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, was preliminarily opened to traffic at around 1:30 pm on Saturday, Xinhua reporters at the rescue site have confirmed.
With a permanent population of about 8,000, the township had been trapped as an "isolated island." Hit by continuous heavy rainfall, the entire township was cut off from outside access with no open roads, power or network services starting from July 5.
The opening of the main road is of great significance for the delivery of relief supplies, as well as the restoration of power supply and communication services in the area, rescuers said.
