China and Pakistan have called on the United States and Iran to immediately cease hostilities, resume contact and dialogue, and strive to reach a comprehensive peace agreement through negotiations.
The joint appeal came as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar in Shanghai on Thursday night.
During their talks, the two senior officials exchanged views on the situation in Iran and coordinated their positions, with both expressing concern over the deterioration of the current situation.
The US and Iran have exchanged a fresh round of strikes in recent days, despite the two sides having signed a framework document a month earlier to pursue further talks toward ending the conflict.
Wang stressed that the first-phase memorandum of understanding reached between the US and Iran was hard-won, describing it as the result not only of negotiations between the two sides but also of the joint efforts of the international community, particularly Pakistan, which played an indispensable role in coordination and mediation.
The core provisions of the memorandum serve the fundamental and long-term interests of both parties and meet the common expectations of the international community, Wang said, urging all parties to fulfill their commitments and abide by the provisions.
For his part, Dar briefed Wang on Pakistan's recent mediation efforts, expressing gratitude for China's understanding and support. He said Pakistan will face difficulties head-on and stay actively engaged in promoting peace talks.
Wang said that China will continue to support Pakistan's mediation efforts and play a constructive role in easing the situation in its own way.
