Many still missing after fatal landslide

Local officials say eight people have died and 34 remain missing after a hillside collapsed onto residential buildings in Pengshui Miao and Tujia autonomous county in Chongqing on Friday.
The collapse occurred at 9:08 am local time, in Hanjia sub-district. At a news conference on Friday evening, officials said that so far, rescuers had pulled 18 people from the debris, of whom eight were pronounced dead.
The remaining 10 survivors were taken to hospital. All are in stable condition and are not believed to be in immediate danger. A further 34 people remain missing.
Ren Xujiang, deputy Party secretary and head of Pengshui Miao and Tujia autonomous county, said 13 specialist rescue teams, comprising around 683 personnel from emergency management, aviation, engineering and tunnel rescue units, had been deployed to the site.
Search and rescue operations were continuing under the coordination of national and municipal emergency authorities.
