China's transport sector maintained steady growth in the first half of 2026, supported by continued expansion in passenger travel, freight transport and port activity, the Ministry of Transport said on Wednesday.
The country recorded 34.17 billion cross-regional passenger trips during the period, up 1.2 percent year-on-year. Road travel continued to account for the vast majority of journeys, while waterway passenger traffic also increased.
Chinese ports handled 9.07 billion metric tons of cargo in the first six months, up 2 percent. Foreign trade cargo performed more strongly than domestic cargo, while container throughput increased 5.9 percent, indicating continued activity in international trade and logistics.
Fixed-asset investment in the transport sector reached 1.5 trillion yuan ($221 billion) during the period, with road construction accounting for the largest share.
The ministry said the transport sector continued to provide support for the country's broader economic and social development.
