China again issues alerts for rainstorms and severe weather

China's national weather authority renewed on Tuesday yellow alerts for rainstorms and severe convective weather, warning of torrential rainfall, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes across large swaths of the country, while forecasting that a tropical system could develop into a typhoon and affect southern China next week.

The National Meteorological Center said some areas in Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Guangdong provinces and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region could receive 100 to 180 millimeters of rainfall from 2 pm Wednesday to 2 pm Thursday.

The weather system is expected to bring short-duration downpours with hourly precipitation of 40 to 60 millimeters, with isolated areas exceeding 80 millimeters.

The center also maintained a yellow alert for severe convective weather, warning that parts of northern China and areas south of the Yangtze River could experience thunderstorms.

Parts of Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Henan provinces could see winds exceeding 89 kilometers per hour.

According to the center's medium-range forecast, two to three tropical cyclones are expected to develop over the northwestern Pacific and the South China Sea during the next 10 days, with one likely to affect southern China around July 27.
