Criminal investigations launched over Ma'erkang bridge collapse

Authorities have launched criminal investigations into individuals suspected of illegal acts linked to the collapse of a bridge in Ma'erkang, Sichuan province, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The accident occurred on Nov 11 when the Hongqi Bridge was struck by a sudden mountain landslide, damaging its approach bridge on the right bank and part of the roadbed. It caused direct economic losses of about 27.72 million yuan ($4.1 million).

No casualties were reported, thanks to early warnings and preemptive traffic control measures.

According to an investigation report released on Friday, a team led by a vice-governor was established after the disaster to identify its causes. They found that the collapse was caused by a reservoir-induced landslide triggered by multiple factors, including complex geological conditions, rising reservoir water levels, and disturbances from construction activities.

It also found that the survey units failed to conduct proper geological surveys and slope stability assessments, leading to hidden safety hazards. Problems in safety inspections and monitoring were also exposed.

Evidence of misconduct involving public officials from local governments, relevant departments, and State-owned enterprises has been transferred to discipline inspection and supervision authorities for handling, while violations by the companies involved have been handed over to industry regulators, the report said.
