China welcomes Solomon Islands' commitment to one-China principle

China has welcomed the Solomon Islands government's reaffirmation of its commitment to the one-China principle, saying the stance will strengthen the political foundation of bilateral relations and create necessary conditions for deeper cooperation.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian made the remarks on Friday after Solomon Islands' Prime Minister Matthew Wale said in an address to the National Parliament on Wednesday that relations with China are vital to the country's development and that his government will remain committed to the one-China principle.

"There is but one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China," Lin said, adding that this is the prevailing consensus in the international community.

China commends the Solomon Islands government for reiterating its firm commitment to the one-China principle, he said.

Lin said China stands ready to work with Solomon Islands to continue deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership featuring mutual respect and common development for a new era.

The two countries will also work to make new progress in building a China-Solomon Islands community with a shared future in the new era, he added.
