Basum Lake, emerald in hidden vale

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2026-08-26 14:49

Tucked in the deep valleys of Nyingchi, Xizang autonomous region, Basum Lake, meaning “green water” in Tibetan, is a renowned glacial freshwater lake in eastern Xizang, a serene paradise on the high plateau.

Lying 3,490 meters above sea level, the lake covers 27 square kilometers. Nourished by plateau rainfall and glacial meltwater from three mountain rivers, it remains ice‑free all year round, a rare wonder on the plateau.

Encircled by snow‑capped peaks and dense forests, it boasts abundant wildlife and vibrant ecosystems. As Xizang’s first natural 5A‑level scenic spot, Basum Lake holds the purest and most breathtaking scenery of eastern Xizang.
