AI-driven component costs fuel back-to-school electronics price surge

As university freshmen prepare for the new academic year, many families are discovering that one of the biggest expenses isn't tuition, but the "back-to-school trio" of a smartphone, laptop and tablet.

Prices for the three essential devices have climbed sharply this year, with entry-level bundles typically costing at least 1,000 yuan ($149) more than a year ago and some higher-spec configurations rising by nearly 50 percent, according to retailers.

The price increases have fueled discussion on social media, where hashtags including "phone prices up more than 20 percent" and "sub-5,000-yuan laptops basically gone" have ranked among trending topics in recent weeks.

The current back-to-school season marks the latest phase of a broader rise in consumer electronics prices that has been unfolding for more than a year. Mainstream smartphones are generally 300 yuan to 1,000 yuan more expensive than last year, while laptop prices have also risen noticeably. Graphics cards, meanwhile, have become so volatile that retailers describe them as carrying "a different price every day".

Industry analysts said the increases reflect structural changes in the global semiconductor supply chain rather than seasonal demand alone.

"The main driver isn't back-to-school demand, but cost pass-through from the artificial intelligence computing boom," said Zhang Yi, chief analyst at iiMedia Research. "Consumers are indirectly paying for the expansion of AI computing capacity."

According to Zhang, global memory manufacturers have shifted production toward higher-margin products such as high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in AI servers, leaving tighter supplies of consumer-grade memory and storage components. That has pushed up the cost of processors, graphics chips and other key components, raising the bill of materials across consumer electronics.

Zhang said the higher prices are already changing buying behavior. Rather than pursuing top-end specifications, more consumers are choosing lower configurations, delaying upgrades or buying previous-generation or used devices.

While component prices are unlikely to return to previous lows in the near term, Zhang expects the pace of increases to moderate as new production capacity comes online. He said supply constraints could begin easing in the second half of next year, depending on capacity expansion by global memory makers and progress in the domestic semiconductor supply chain.

Despite higher prices, demand remains resilient. Home appliance retailer Suning.com said foot traffic at its electronics stores has more than tripled in recent weeks, led by incoming university students and office workers upgrading devices ahead of the autumn season. Since the beginning of August, sales of smartphones, computers and smart wearables have increased 10 percent, 87 percent and 68 percent, respectively, from the July levels. The number of shoppers purchasing multiple devices in one visit has climbed to about 1.5 times the normal level.

Retailers are also seeing a shift in purchasing priorities.

"Students are moving from 'buying everything' to 'buying what's right'," said Feng Jin, deputy general manager of the 3C consumer electronics division at Suning.com. "Buying appropriately has become more important than buying the most expensive products."

Rather than treating digital devices as a reward after entrance exams, students are increasingly tailoring purchases to their academic needs. Engineering and computer science majors tend to prioritize processors and memory, while students studying design or digital media focus on graphics performance and color accuracy. Humanities students are more likely to choose lightweight laptops or two-in-one tablets with longer battery life.

"The same 7,000-yuan budget can lead to completely different purchasing decisions," Feng said. "Engineering students usually choose high-performance laptops, while liberal arts students often prefer thinner, lighter devices."

The shift extends beyond traditional devices. Alongside smartphones and computers, students are increasingly purchasing content-creation products such as handheld gimbals, action cameras and smartphone photography accessories as social media and video production become more common on campuses.

To capture that demand, retailers have expanded interactive experience areas where shoppers can test features such as image stabilization, AI tracking, noise cancellation and classroom recording before buying. Suning.com said conversion rates among customers who participate in these hands-on demonstrations are nearly 20 percent higher than those who do not.

Government subsidies are helping offset some of the higher costs. Cities including Nanjing, Jiangsu province, have introduced new consumer voucher programs covering products such as smartphones, tablets and computers, offering subsidies of 10 percent with a maximum of 1,000 yuan per purchase. Retailers are also combining those incentives with trade-in programs, brand discounts and student promotions to reduce the cost of upgrading devices.
