Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Friday that China investigates and handles cases involving foreign nationals suspected of violating the law or committing crimes in the country in accordance with the law.
Guo made the remarks in response to reports that 52 Singaporeans had been arrested and detained in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region over suspected involvement in pyramid schemes and related offences.
Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and police disclosed the arrests on Friday.
Speaking at a regular news briefing in Beijing, Guo said the lawful rights of those involved had been fully protected.
He referred questions seeking further information to the relevant Chinese authorities.
