Local authorities in Wuhan, Hubei province, have shut down a facility allegedly providing illegal assisted reproductive services and detained eight people, according to a statement published by the city's health commission on Tuesday.
The action was triggered by online reports released on Monday that pointed to underground laboratories in the city's Wuhu Street area.
The commission said it has joined efforts with public security authorities to conduct an investigation.
The eight detainees remain in police custody as the investigation continues, the commission said.
