Xianju lanterns shed light on Chinese culture for Omani students

Chinese intangible cultural heritage came to life in three schools in Oman on Sept 24, as local students learned to make Xianju lanterns during a cultural exchange activity organized by the Oman station of the Harmony Culture program from Taizhou, Zhejiang province.

It was the students' first close-up experience with Xianju lanterns, a traditional craft featuring intricate needlework, no visible supporting framework, and a translucent design. They were amazed by the craftsmanship and the traditional Chinese wisdom behind the lanterns.

Under the guidance of station director Ying Jinghui, the students threaded needles, applied paper, and made their own lanterns. As the lanterns lit up one by one, their warm glow filled the classrooms with smiles.

Through making and admiring the lanterns, the students experienced the spirit of reunion and harmony while gaining a better understanding of Chinese intangible cultural heritage.
