A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck Panlong district in Kunming, Yunnan province, on Wednesday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
The earthquake occurred at 6:31 pm at depth of 10 kilometers, the center said.
The quake was strongly felt near the epicenter, with doors and windows shaking violently as if buffeted by strong winds.
Yunnan's emergency management authorities said there were no reports of casualties in several Kunming's main urban areas, including Panlong district, as of 8:30 pm. Power, transportation, and communications services remained normal.
The local government has activated a Level IV emergency response, the lowest of China's four-tier earthquake emergency response system.
