Chinese courts and financial regulators have pledged to strengthen protection of consumers' and investors' legitimate rights and interests by tightening oversight of business practices and fostering a sound legal environment for the financial sector.

On Monday, the Supreme People's Court, the People's Bank of China, the National Financial Regulatory Administration and the China Securities Regulatory Commission jointly released details of six representative cases involving the protection of financial consumers and investors. The cases cover financial lending, fund management, digital finance, life insurance and securities investment.

The Supreme People's Court emphasized the importance of using financial tools and services to support technological innovation while regulating and prohibiting irregularities and improper conduct that could harm consumers.

In one case, a lower court ruled that a fund company's unilateral change to its dispute resolution method after consumers had subscribed to its products was legally ineffective. The company had used its technological advantage through its app to make the change.

The SPC also highlighted two cases, including one involving insurance compensation for critical illnesses, to encourage judges to work with regulatory authorities to resolve financial disputes through diverse channels.

The court called for streamlining rights-protection procedures, shortening case-handling times and reducing the costs of seeking remedies, with the aim of providing financial consumers and small and medium-sized investors with more convenient, efficient and affordable dispute resolution options.
