Scenario projects aim to accelerate pace of innovation

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2026-10-21 20:30

Editor's note: China has launched an initial set of 136 major scenario projects to test new technologies, products and business models in real-world settings. China Central Television spoke to Wei Qijia, a researcher at the State Information Center under the National Development and Reform Commission, on the significance of these projects. Below are excerpts of the interview. The views don't necessarily represent those of China Daily.

These projects, which focus on significant application scenarios, are strategically targeted. They cover areas essential for advancing industrial transformation and upgrading as well as accelerating the development of new quality productive forces.

For instance, by opening up these scenarios, validation spaces are created for cloud computing and industrial internet technologies, along with new methods for ensuring production safety. Similarly, establishing foundational services such as data platforms, framework platforms and scenario application centers in the field of brain-computer interfaces will support product validation and market expansion for relevant industries. Additionally, the construction of new energy storage systems and associated projects will set an example for the green and low-carbon transformation of the energy system.

These flagship application projects are likely to play a pivotal role in fostering and opening up new scenarios, enabling the realization of innovative technologies and business models to deliver tangible results. This integration of technological and industrial innovation will yield real-world outcomes through a combined effort.

The 136 scenario projects are highly exemplary. Their implementation and experience will result in more projects, leading to an increasing number of success stories in scenario applications and technology transformation.

This will accelerate the pace and maturity of translating technology into industry. By driving the cultivation and opening-up of scenarios, an ecosystem can be created where new technologies, products and standards are better utilized.

Flexible production lines, smart factories, green factories, high-standard digital parks and zero-carbon parks are examples of application scenarios that help businesses cultivate production-related service sectors and facilitate better operational and project management for enterprises.

As scenario applications mature further, the integration of next-generation information technology with medical devices will more effectively enhance the efficiency of health consultation, diagnostic guidance, auxiliary treatment and remote medical services.

Private enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises are very active in technological innovation and have accumulated substantial scenario demands through frontline production.

By releasing lists of new technologies, products and business models for validation, private enterprises can better align their technological advantages with scenario needs. This also allows more innovative entities to participate in product validation and iteration.

As long as their product performance and technical solutions meet the requirements, these enterprises can participate in scenario implementation testing. This open approach not only helps businesses refine their products and gain practical experience, but also provides more diverse technical options for scenario construction.

This approach encourages optimization of technical solutions and cost efficiency in scenario construction, ultimately creating a win-win situation where SMEs are given opportunities to grow, scenario construction is better supported technically and the industry's innovative energy continues to thrive.
