HKU and Pacific Music Group launch student record label

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Hong Kong recently announced a strategic alliance between its Music Entrepreneurship and Popular Practice (MEPoP) initiative and Pacific Music Group (PMG), a pan-Asian record label and talent management company. The partnership launched M Records, a new record label providing funding, tools and industry expertise to emerging student creators across Asia.

Launched by the Faculty of Arts of HKU in 2025, MEPoP claims to be a first-of-its-kind institute in Asia that blends academia and practice under one roof. It provides HKU students and the wider music community with a range of programs, events, lectures, and mentorship to foster musical development and entrepreneurship within the sector.

The launch of M Records marks a major step forward for MEPoP and PMG in bridging academia and industry, theory and practice. Under the partnership, M Records will offer creative and business support to student creators in Asia, including track funding, music distribution and marketing services, and access to industry professionals for guidance.

Professor Stacy Huang, co-director of MEPoP and assistant professor at HKU's Department of Music, said the collaboration will help shine a light on a new generation of talent from students in Asia.

Jonathan Serbin, CEO of PMG, noted that there are many talented students at HKU and across the wider Asian region. While it has become easy for artists to upload tracks today, many students do not have the resources, tools, and guidance to help their music reach a broader audience. In collaboration with HKU, he looked forward to developing and fostering emerging talent and amplifying their voices.

In its first phase, M Records will roll out its themed EP (Extended Play) compilation project. Each quarter, the record label will announce a theme drawn from an intellectual field, inviting student creators across Asia to write and produce a song inspired by it.
