The First Global PhD Student Forum for Interdisciplinary and Innovative Research was held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University from Friday to Sunday, attracting more than 600 young scholars from home and abroad to exchange perspectives on their own research and explore the possibilities of research beyond disciplinary boundaries.
Hosted by SJTU's Graduate School and organized by the university's High-Level Innovative Talent Training Institutions, the forum — under the theme of "interdisciplinary innovation, leading the future" — focused on emerging directions in science and technology, with programs featuring disciplinary fields of engineering, sciences, and medicine.
Parallel forums on physics and astronomy, advanced manufacturing, biomedicine, intelligent computing and empowerment, and frontier interdisciplinary research were also held during the event, where international participants represented more than 30 leading universities across 13 countries and regions from different continents.
During the forum, students presented their work and discussed their findings and unresolved questions with experts and peers. The conversations brought fresh perspectives to their projects and potential paths for further inquiry. Experts and student peers jointly evaluated the presentations.
Organizers said the forum also reflected SJTU's doctoral education framework — top-notch program, platform-based education, and new disciplines — and its commitment to addressing emerging academic questions through interdisciplinary research. For SJTU, the event is also a way to encourage lasting academic partnerships and open up new possibilities for scientific discovery.
