Lu Yanhai, a patrol vehicle driver, travels dozens of kilometers each workday across a patrol area covering roughly 6,700 hectares. He said he now spots gazelles on almost every patrol. Near the Changliushui Valley watering site, he often slows down to watch the animals. They usually run off when the vehicle stops, sometimes turning back to have a look.
The growing sightings come as Zhongwei has restored more than 370,00 hectares of desertified land, pushing the desert's edge back by about 25 kilometers. Vegetation coverage in the restored areas has increased from less than 1 percent to 42 percent, according to the reserve.
The reserve has recorded 10 wild mammal species and 52 bird species. More than 140 AI-powered cameras help monitor the wildlife and their habitats.
