China repatriates former Guangxi official suspected of bribery

Li Biao, a former official in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region suspected of taking bribes, has been apprehended overseas and repatriated to China, the country's top anti-graft authorities said on Friday.

Li's capture resulted from close cooperation between supervisory and public security authorities in Guangxi and law enforcement agencies in relevant countries, under the coordination of the office for fugitive repatriation and asset recovery under the Central Anti-Corruption Coordination Group, according to the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China and the National Commission of Supervision.

Li, 63, formerly served as Party secretary and head of the Guangxi sericulture technology promotion station. He fled overseas in November 2025. The Wuzhou supervisory commission in Guangxi opened an investigation into him in January 2026 on suspicion of bribery.

Authorities subsequently stepped up efforts to track him down through international law enforcement cooperation, leading to his recent capture and repatriation.

An official with the office for fugitive repatriation and asset recovery described Li's return as the latest achievement of the "Sky Net 2026" campaign, a nationwide operation targeting fugitives suspected of corruption and seeking to recover illicit assets.

The official said China would continue to deepen international anti-corruption cooperation, strengthen efforts to repatriate fugitives, prevent fugitives from fleeing overseas and recover illicit assets, and intensify investigations into cross-border corruption.
