Pudong New Area will lead more pioneering efforts in the service industry, digital trade and cross-border data flows to further advance its higher level of opening-up, Li Zheng, the district's Party secretary, said on Friday.
Li made these remarks during a promotional conference at the 9th China International Import Expo, which is underway in Shanghai until Nov 10.
Pudong will focus on the development of 10 hardcore industries such as artificial intelligence, civil aviation and shipbuilding. Innovation results achieved at the technology front should be better integrated into industries to generate new growth engines. AI should be applied in more scenarios and industries so that new technologies and products can be nurtured in the district.
Wu Jincheng, head of Pudong New Area, underlined the importance of international cooperation and cross-border innovation. The district will better leverage the visa-free entry and a 30-day stay upon invitation allowed at the Shanghai Eastern Hub International Business Cooperation Zone. The bonded zone at the Zhangjiang Science City should help the independently developed innovation results reach overseas more efficiently, he said.
Financial support and workspace will be provided to startups at a faster pace to make mass production possible, Wu said.
Li Yang, director of the academic committee of the China Capital Market Society, suggested Pudong build a coordinated mechanism connecting industries and academia so that universities and institutes can conduct applications and research tailored to industry demand. Two-way talent flow, large scientific infrastructures and open innovation platforms are also indispensable to Pudong's development, he said.
Yao Gongda, president of Applied Materials China, said that the close ties between companies are the foundation of hardcore technology innovation. Pudong's strength in industrial systems, policies, capital and talent will facilitate the development of the integrated circuit industry.
The district is also well-positioned to empower high-end smart manufacturing with AI thanks to its advantages in rich technology reserve, complete ecosystem and large market size, Yao said.
