China is willing to further expand cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council in the peaceful use of nuclear technology, said Shan Zhongde, head of the China Atomic Energy Authority.
He made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the fourth China-ASEAN Forum on Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology, held in Kuala Lumpur earlier this week. The forum invited representatives from Gulf Cooperation Council member states for the first time this year.
In his opening address, Shan said China stands ready to deepen cooperation with ASEAN and GCC countries in the peaceful use of nuclear technology, working with them to build a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future and a China-Arab community with a shared future for the new era.
China will firmly safeguard the legitimate rights of developing countries in the region to peacefully use nuclear technology and work with all parties to address nuclear-related risks and challenges, deepen industrial cooperation and promote shared development, he said.
China will also promote the development of nuclear technology in a safer, more efficient and more economical manner, while strengthening research and development cooperation in areas such as small modular reactors and controlled nuclear fusion to jointly address climate change. It will also step up cooperation in talent exchanges, Shan added.
At the forum, representatives from countries including Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates delivered national reports outlining the current status and development plans for sustainable nuclear energy. They also put forward proposals and visions for further strengthening nuclear cooperation.
The forum featured four roundtable discussions, during which representatives shared their countries' experience in nuclear energy and nuclear technology development. They also exchanged views on key areas, including small reactor innovation, irradiation applications, medical uses of isotopes and talent development, and explored the potential for regional cooperation.
An exhibition showcasing China's achievements in nuclear energy and nuclear technology was also held during the event, highlighting the country's latest technological advances and practical applications in the field.
