Chinese shares edge down

BEIJING - Chinese equities dropped for the first time in four days on Wednesday, led by heavy weights and banks.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index on the Shanghai Stock Exchange inched down 0.62 percent, or 19.36 points, to end at 3,109.11 points. The Shenzhen Component Index on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange closed at 12,494.35 points, down 98.69 points, or 0.78 percent.

Combined turnover was 219.76 billion yuan ($32.18 billion), up from 215.08 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 511 to 358 in Shanghai. Gainers outnumbered losers by 505 to 368 in Shenzhen.
