Lenovo debuts world's 1st Intel smart phone

Lenovo Mobile Internet and Digital Home Business Group (Lenovo MIDH) and Intel Corporation officially launched the world's first smart phone equipped with an Intel processor and platform in Beijing on Wednesday.

Intel Executive Vice-President Sean Maloney said "Lenovo will be the first OEM in the world to deliver the Intel smart phone" in his speech at the 2012 Intel Developer Forum.

Empowered by Intel single core processor with two hyper threads, the phone has a 4.5-inch 256K color TFT display, an 800 megapixel CMOS camera, and uses an Android 2.3 Ginger Bread operation system.

A forum audience engineer Yu Hongjian received a Lenovo K800 phone as a prize for a singing game. After using the phone for about 15 minutes, Yu told a reporter that "many things in the phone are customized to Chinese people, including some apps and some trivia things. But the localization also brings me inconvenience - I did not find Gmail among the email service."

Lenovo Vice-President Chen Wenhui said Lenovo and Intel "will achieve a win-win situation in the new era of mobile internet, through the cooperation in smart phone manufacturing."

However, "the result of making a bet on hardware is not clear," LG Electronics' mobile phone brand manager said in a telephone interview.

Processors races

"Many mobile phone makers use dual-core processors other than Intel", the LG mobile phone brand manager said.

Various dual-core processors are available on the market. NVidia, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and ST-Ericsson respectively launched their dual-core processor for mobile phones in 2010. Apple's dual-core processor hit the market in 2011, but solely in Apple products.

Nokia's smart phone carries ST-Ericsson's dual-core processor, and Motorola uses nVidia. Samsung and LG's also go with nVidia. HTC still bands with Qualcomm.
