China's cities to house 1 billion by 2030

China will see an urbanization rate of 70 percent in 2030 with more than 1 billion people living in cities, according to a report published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Wednesday.

According to the report on China's human development, there will an increase of 310 million urban residents between 2010 and 2030.

The report also pointed out that, though China's urbanization level is close to the global average, its large cities are overdeveloped and overburdened, while many of its small- and medium-sized cities are underdeveloped, the China News Service reported.

The gap between large cities in the eastern regions and small- and medium-sized cities in central and western regions is getting wider, with large numbers of migrants continuing to move to the large cities in search of more and better resources, according to the report.
