Ninety seven people died from a total of 81 drunk driving-related car accidents in Beijing in the first half of the year, according to the statistics released by Beijing Traffic Management Bureau (BTMB), the Beijing News reported today.

Intoxicated driving, which accounted for 17.3 percent of traffic accidents this year, has become the second biggest cause of the traffic accidents after truck accidents, the BTMB said.

The BTMB said there was an increase of number of people who lost their lives due to driving after drinking compared with the same time last year, during which traffic checks were tightened for the Beijing Olympics. But the BTMB gave no figures for 2008.
