A 10-ton gantry crane collapsed at 6 pm in Jiading District of Shanghai, police said. The conditions of the injured were unavailable as of 11 pm.

One of the dead was a migrant worker from neighboring Jiangsu province, said a worker surnamed Song.

All the victims were sheltering in a small house under the crane from rain, said Li Jingbao, 36, who witnessed the accident.

Police have cordoned off the site. The investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

The 1,318-km railway is scheduled to open in 2010, with a speed up to 350 km per hour.
