163,000 evacuated in S China as Mujigae lands

Updated: 2009-09-11 23:41 BEIJING: More than 163,600 people were evacuated in southern Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi and no injuries and deaths reported as of Friday noon as tropical storm Mujigae landed in south China.
About 103,000 people had been evacuated and 38,600 fishing boats returned in Guangdong Province, and 21,000 people were evacuated and 9,500 fishing boats returned to harbor in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Mujigae, the 13th tropical storm this year, landed at about 2:20 am Friday at Wenchang, Hainan Province and moved to the central area of the Beibu Gulf at 2:00 pm, with a maximum wind speed of 72 km an hour in its eye. The storm had brought downpours to the two provinces and one region from 8:00 am Thursday to 2:00 pm Friday. The office urged local authorities to closely monitor the moving track of the storm and to prevent flooding. |
