BEIJING - China said Thursday that dialogue and cooperation are the proper methods for resolving disputes over human rights issues.
"We oppose countries exerting pressure on a certain country through the resolution of human rights issues," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a regular press briefing, commenting on a resolution concerning Sri Lanka to be voted on by the UN Human Rights Council.
The resolution calls for Sri Lanka to properly investigate alleged war crimes during the final stages of its 26-year conflict with the Tamil Tigers.
Hong spoke highly of the "great progress" Sri Lanka has scored in promoting human rights and realizing national reconciliation. China believes that the government and people of Sri Lanka have the ability to handle the country's domestic affairs.
The international community should create favorable conditions for Sri Lanka to stabilize its domestic situation and develop its economy, instead of measures that may further complicate issues.
