China vows more co-op, communication with WHO

BEIJING - China will continue to promote cooperation and communication with the World Health Organization (WHO) and make contributions to global health, Vice President Xi Jinping said Friday during a meeting with WHO chief Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun.

Xi congratulated Chan on winning a second term as the WHO chief and expected Chan to further promote the development of global health.

Xi said the Chinese government has paid high attention to health development, and will deepen medical and health care reform in order to provide safe, efficient, convenient, and inexpensive medical services.

"At present, world health problems are in close relationship with international issues, including politics, economy and social development, and have a impact on international relations and foreign policies," Xi said.

At the meeting, Chan spoke highly of China's achievements in deepening medical reform, and thanked China for its support to the WHO's work.

Chan said she will seriously perform her duty to boost the development of global health.
