Suspect sent back to Taiwan: authority

NANCHANG - A Taiwan resident who was allegedly involved in crimes of endangering state security and public security has been sent back to Taiwan Saturday, said a state security authority.

Chung Ting-pang, suspected of conducting a series of criminal activities since 2003 that endangered state security and public security, was put under residential surveillance on June 18, according to a statement from the state security authority of East China's Jiangxi province.

Chung's legitimate rights had been guaranteed during the investigation, said the statement, adding that Chung's wife and a relative of him in the mainland was informed of the residential surveillance within 24 hours as required by law, visits and telephone calls had been approved, a meeting with his lawyer had been arranged.

It also said that Chung had confessed to the charges against him, voluntarily confessed his other crimes and disclosed other suspects' crimes, which had constituted a meritorious service.

Therefore, the authority decided to mitigate his punishment, ordering him to make a statement of repentance and sending him back to Taiwan in accordance with the law, it added.
