TAIPEI - Taiwan's high court on Wednesday sentenced  Lin Cheng-wei to life in prison in a retrial for shooting Sean Lien, son of honorary Kuomintang (KMT) chairman Lien Chan, during an election campaign in 2010.

Sean Lien was shot in Taipei county on November 26, 2010, the eve of the island's mayoral and city councilor elections, when he was campaigning for a KMT candidate. Lin was apprehended on the spot.

The ruling followed a 24-year prison sentence handed down by a local district court in May.

The high court sharpened the sentence after considering the fact that Lin's attack both injured Sean Lien and killed a bystander, resulting in attempted murder and murder, respectively.

Sean Lien voiced indignation against the ruling Wednesday afternoon, calling on related departments to continue investigating parts of the case, including where Lin's firearm and ammunition came from, his intended targets and motivations and whether Lin had an accomplice.

Lin has the option of appealing Wednesday's verdict.
