'Catching Fire' ignites global box office with $307.7 million

BEIJING  -- "Gravity" topped China's box office charts in the week ending Nov 24, grossing 227 million yuan (37.25 million US dollars), according to Tuesday's China Film News.

The film stars Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts adrift in space and hit theaters on the Chinese mainland on Nov 19.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," which was directed by Francis Lawrence, returns Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence, who won an Academy Award for best actress last year for her work in David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook," in the lead roles.

The film ranked second in the charts and has taken in 82.4 million yuan since its release on Nov 21.

"Control," a film directed by Kenneth Bi and starring Daniel Wu, Yao Chen, Simon Yam and Ady An, was third, claiming 22.3 million yuan in the week since its debut on Nov 22.

"Thor: The Dark World," which stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, the God of Thunder, ranked fourth, raking in 39.6 million yuan in ticket sales in the week, with an accumulative revenue of 329 million yuan since its debut on Oct. 31.

In the week from Nov 18 to Nov 24, 11.83 million people visited cinemas nationwide, up 51 percent year on year, while the weekly box office saw a 49.8-percent jump, with a total of 434 million yuan.\
