April 2010: Haiti, Mexico

Michelle Obama visited the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince three months after an earthquake struck the city. She talked with students whose lives have been upended by the disaster and visited squalid encampments of families living under bed sheets. She then visited Mexico and discussed the illegal drug trade with her Mexican counterpart, Margarita Zavala.

June 2011: Botswana, South Africa

Michelle Obama's one-week African trip was aimed at promoting youth leadership, education, and health and wellness. She met Nelson Mandela, visited museums commemorating campaigns against apartheid and took her family on a safari.
