Close encounters with art and real life

Her innovations have stirred controversy online with some people questioning her loyalty to the tradition of her art.

"I don't mind those negative reviews," Li says. "The more discussion, the better. It means that people still care about Peking Opera, which is considered a dying art."

Besides gathering young Peking Opera actors, Li is also grateful to have established Peking Opera actors perform in her shows.

For example, two veteran actors in their 70s, Luo Changde and Zhao Naihua, will return to the stage after a decade-long hiatus to star in Chun Ri Yan.

"Those elderly artists are very supportive and encourage innovation," Li says.

"I believe that if the late Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang were still alive, he would take many more risks in reforming the old art."
