Award-winning sci-fi novel adapted for stage

A stage adaptation of Chinese writer Liu Cixin's award winning Sci-fi novel The Three-body Problem has turned the futuristic world, where the earth is invaded by aliens, into a reality but still leaving enough room for the imagination. The 3D multi-media stage drama produced by the Shanghai-based Lotus Lee Drama Studio debuted in the capital.

What would it mean for the human race if it were to come in contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence? Such is the question set out by the Three-Body Problem trilogy.

Adapted from the first installment of the award-winning trilogy, the two-hour show spans multiple decades and focuses on main characters Ye Wenjie and Wang Miao, two scientists in the very near future.

In order to realize the fantastical scenes from the original book, the production has invested heavily on state-of-the-art stage technology, such as 3D mapping, hovering drones and other special effects.

"The Three-Body trilogy contains not just elements of mystery, the latest technology and imagination but also depicts roles vividly. These expand the dimensions for stage drama, which is challenging for us. For me personally, it is quite exciting to use the latest technology in theater," said Liu Fangqi, director of The Three-body Problem.
