With only two and a half years in the industry under her belt, Vancouver designer Eva Chen, originally from northeast China, made her first Toronto Fashion Week debut March 14.

Having traveled around the world in the past 20 years to Singapore, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Europe before settling in Vancouver in 2000, Chen said she drew inspiration from all the countries she had visited.

Chen's collection this season, called "Elegance," was all about woman's body. The 24 pieces featured in the collection included a variety of form-fitting dresses, power suits and gowns. The collection contained playful contrasts: the contrasting color schemes between burgundy and nude, black and gold which were softened up with feathers and trimmings.

"I loved it, it was absolutely amazing. All the detailing on the dresses, especially the power suit, how it was see-through at the bottom and everything, it was amazing," said Tanisha Conley-Streeter, a visitor at the show.

Known for her glamorous style and feminine silhouettes, Chen revealed the source of her inspiration.

"I got the inspiration from some Chinese restaurants. They have beautiful ceiling ships," she said. "Like a boat or something, very creative, I loved it. I got the inspiration (and thought) maybe I can get some idea for my dresses."

The well-received designer, who has already gained a following, has big plans up her sleeve. In a few months, Chen will open a store in Beijing, and plans to expand into Shanghai, Los Angeles and other cities in the near future.

One of the most highly anticipated events at the Toronto Fashion Week was Adrian Wu's collection. The 21-year-old designer is one of the youngest designers entering the Canadian fashion industry in years.
