The hills are alive

To commemorate the 100th birthday of artist Wu Yifeng (1907-1998), an exhibition showing the evolution of his style through his 70-year career is now on at the National Art Museum of China. Wu's 150 works on show focus on the mountains and rivers of Southwestern China, presenting the spirit of nature in the form of large-scale horizontal scrolls, calligraphy and paintings on fans. Colors produce shades or varying degrees of luminescence for the foggy mountains and forests, as well as the clouds and leaves. Different from traditional ink paintings in which colors are often secondary, Wu's works emphasize vitality and lively atmosphere through the proper arrangement of tone.

Born in Zhejiang Province, Wu graduated from the Shanghai Fine Arts School in 1926 and established fame for his landscape works in Sichuan Province as early as the 1930s.

The show, sponsored by the China Artists Association and three other institutes, will tour Hangzhou and Chengdu afterwards.
