As the transport hub of Northeast China, Shenyang has a complete transportation system including aviation, railway, a two-line subway system, and an extensive expressway network. The bus service throughout the city is quite convenient with more than 160 bus routes and almost 600 buses running within the city. Terminal III at Shenyang Taoxian International Airport is the largest terminal station in Northeast China. In the south part of the city, a new tram network system was built in 2013.

The Shenyang North Station is the largest railway station in Liaoning province and has become one of the five most important railway hubs in China, earning itself the name "Northeast's No. 1 Station". In 2011, a huge expansion project known as the "North Station Transport Hub Reconstruction Project" was initiated in response to the growing demand of floor area posed by the increasing passenger traffic after the introduction of the high-speed rail service.

The Shenyang Railway Station has a history of more than 100 years. It was built by the Russians in 1899 and later expanded by the Japanese. Today, it focuses on regular service and is being renovated with a large archway and a new terminal built up, to reduce stress on the boarding platforms, now that the construction has been completed.

In Dec 2011, the Shenyang city government announced its plan to rebuild a light rail transit network in the Hunnan New District, comprising of 4 lines and 60 km distance in total length. The new tram network started operation in 2013.

In 2005, the construction of the first Shenyang Metro line finally started and the construction of the second line started in 2006. The first (East-West) line was opened in 2010 and the second (north–south) was opened in 2012.There will be other 8 lines in the future.
