Expats sample the charm of Zhouzhuang

A group of 37 expats from 11 countries across the world including Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy, the United States, Denmark, South Korea, paid a visit to Zhouzhaung on April 27, to sample the unique charm of the iconic water town in Kunshan, East China’s Jiangsu province.

The expats toured around the town and experienced some traditional Chinese culture by learning to make tofu and Qingtuan.

Qingtuan, or green rice balls, are widely consumed in China's Jiangnan area - the region south of the Yangtze River. The seasonal delicacies are usually made from glutinous rice mixed with pounded mugwort - an edible wild herb thought to prevent toxic insect bites.

Zhouzhuang dubbed the “Venice of the East” is noted for its profound history, elegant waterway views and well-preserved buildings.

The group of foreigners also joyed a Kunsqu opera performance during the visit. Kunqu Opera, one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera, originates from Kunshan.

Impressed by the trip to Zhouzhuang, Nguyen thanh phan from the US said that it was an honor to attend the event and he will share his experience with his friends and colleagues in the hope that they will sample the charm of Kunshan as well.

An official from the Kunshan office of foreign affairs, said that hosting such an activity aims to present the culture and history of a water town in Jiangnan area to the expats working in Kunshan, thus enabling them to see the city from diversified perspectives.
