The satellite launched by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has exposed the dilemma over security conditions on the Korean Peninsula.

People familiar with the situation on the peninsula know the region has never lacked the driving force for change. Stalemate may be the most unfavorable situation for the relevant parties, says an article in People's Daily. Excerpts:

Although minor changes cannot break the overall deadlock, they constitute an evolution process, consistently providing the DPRK with new opportunities to take initiatives. As long as the DPRK has the initiative, it has a stronger sense of security and confidence with its situation.

But the Korean Peninsula cannot afford a vicious cycle that only complicates the situation.

China supports solving the issue through dialogue and negotiations, and opposes any actions that may escalate regional tension, and is also against military conflict. These principles show China's responsibility as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, care for the concerns of neighboring countries, and emphasize the point that the Korean Peninsula cannot afford such a vicious cycle.

Judging from these principles, it is easier to understand China's response to the satellite launch. The DPRK has the right to use space peacefully and is obliged to abide by relevant resolutions of the Security Council. At the same time, any response by the council to the launch should be prudent and moderate, to avoid escalating tension.

To prevent the security situation on the Korean Peninsula worsening, the international community should consider the concerns of all relevant parties.

Whenever the security situation on the peninsula is in the headlines, there are calls for a resumption of the Six-Party Talks. It is to be hoped that all countries concerned can calmly understand China's stance and intentions.
