Comment on "Revision to law targets makers of baby formula" (China Daily, June 24)
Although it is true, as the article says, that "it is rare for a law to be amended after being in force for only five years", a huge number of people like me are eagerly waiting for the amendment to the Food Safety Law.
I believe the authorities and people are focusing on articles related to baby formula. I don't need to stress how angry we get when food safety scandals endanger babies' health. Such scandals show that the current law has some loopholes that need to be plugged to guarantee the safety of citizens, especially children.
I'm glad to see the changes in the draft amendment. But the new law should be implemented as seriously as it is designed. Many details need to be pondered over to guarantee the effectiveness of the law. Offenders who endanger public health by compromising on the safety of food should be treated as criminals and duly punished in order to deter others from following their examples to make extra profits.
