Apart from anything else, reading to a younger family member, especially if it is the parents, promotes family bonding.
Parents demonstrate that reading for pleasure is acceptable and not a chore, and to sit quietly together is probably as good quality time with a child as playing a sport.
Sharing in a non-competitive manner shows children that life is not always about winning, getting the highest score or being the best, but about sharing time and interests with the family.
