Built under the Zhongshan Mountain, the Mausoleum of Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China, merges with the landscapes around it very well. It was hailed as the most outstanding mausoleum in modern Chinese history. [Photo/jstour.com]

With stone sculptures of 24 animals and eight generals and civilian officials aligned on both sides of the Spirit Path, the stone sculptures at the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum of Ming Dynasty are rare art treasures. The founder of Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang and his empress were buried here. The architectural composition of the Xiaoling Mausoleum has been the prototype for imperial tombs built later in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is also the first site on the World Heritage List for Nanjing, which served as capital of six dynasties. [Photo/jstour.com]

The Presidential Palace of the Republic of China is located at the site of a palace for princes in the Ming Dynasty and the office of the General Governors of the vast regions inside provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui and Jiangxi in the Qing Dynasty. It became the Palace of the Heavenly Kingdom after Hong Xiuquan's occupation of Nanjing with his Taiping Revolution forces in 1853. On Jan 1, 1912, Sun Yat-sen inaugurated as the provisional President of the Republic of China and kept offices at the Presidential Palace for a while. Many decisive moments of modern China have been made in the then political center of Nanjing. It is the largest Chinese modern history museum today. [Photo/jstour.com]
